A self-driven car, otherwise known as a driverless vehicle, fully autonomous car, robotic car or robo-car, is a car that is able to sense its surroundings and move safely in without the need for human assistance. In the past, the only real option for self-driving cars was to use a robotic chauffeur that was controlled by computers, which were then placed in a position to perform their duties in front of the car in front of them. Nowadays, there are several advances in the field of robotics technology which mean that a driverless car could in fact soon be here.
The first improvements in autonomous cars occurred after the launch of Google’s autonomous vehicles which have become the envy of most auto industry people, and some even believe they are the best of their kind to date. These Google vehicles operate by taking decisions on their own from the available information it has been programmed to recognize from the road, traffic, pedestrians and other cars. A good example of this would be when a pedestrian appears, it will notify the Google car to turn left or right based on what it sees, something a human driver would not be able to do. Another example would be if a driver is backing out of his car and he hits another vehicle in front of him, the Google car will alert the driver to stop immediately without the human driver being able to do anything about it.
The first steps in the development of future autonomous vehicles are already being taken by the major automobile companies including Audi, BMW, Toyota, and Honda. All three of these manufacturers have been working on different types of vehicles for the purpose of fully autonomous driving for the past few years. Each of the companies have plans in place to build cars which have the ability to drive themselves without the need of a human to take over the steering wheel, but all of these vehicles are still far from ready for use by consumers.
One of the main advantages with driverless car technology is the fact that it reduces accidents in the road which in return reduces the risk of serious injuries and even death. If you were to drive with no control over your vehicle and crash into a car or a pedestrian, then a driver in a driverless vehicle would have no way to know and therefore no way to avoid hitting the car in front of him and thus causing an accident. Both of these scenarios can be avoided by a fully autonomous car. This in turn means less time off the road and therefore less accidents in the future.
There are two major advancements in the area of robotics technology currently being made. One of them involves developing systems that would allow the car to be able to communicate with other cars and vehicles around it without the need for any physical contact. As technology progresses more of this type of technology will be developed, giving humans even less reason to worry about their safety. It also gives us greater peace of mind that we can feel safe in a fully autonomous car, as we don’t have to rely on the guidance of our driver to keep us safe in a dangerous situation and we can continue to drive freely knowing that we are in control.
The other advancement in the field of autonomous vehicles that will likely take place is the development of computer software that allows the car to be able to detect obstacles. At present, self-piloted cars can’t drive under any weather conditions. However, if and when such improvements are developed, then we may be able to drive under all sorts of weather conditions and also navigate through urban environments which are now out of the reach of self-piloted vehicles.
